The Hidden Step

step
Here is how:
1. Ask for the hiring manager’s name and refer to it often
The sweetest music to anyone’s ears is hearing their own name recited by
someone else. The worst is hearing someone mispronounce their name or get it
wrong all together. I cannot help but to chuckle when someone calls me mistak-
enly Frank (instead of Fred), proud to refer to me by frst name.
2.Compliment (praise) the hiring manager
Below are a few examples:
“I would like to thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to make this call.
I realize that a company as well thought of as XYZ frm must have a great deal of
faith in you to put you in charge of an important position such as this. ”
OR
“I would like to thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to make this call. I
acknowledge how hard it must be for you to sort through as many resumes as you must be
receiving for this position. I applaud you for your tenacity to review each resume, identify
qualifed applicants and then take the time to call those applicants.”
Although there are two examples outlined above on how to praise the hiring
manager, feel free to construct your own. Compliment someone only if you be-
lieve in what you are saying. Refrain from fattery. Flattery occurs when you are
not genuine about your compliment. Honesty is rule number one. Say it only if
you mean it.
