Redirect
After Thank and Compliment, give the hiring manager a chance to
respond. They may ask you a question or make a comment.
When it is your turn to speak, after “Thanking” and “Complimenting”,
respond by using a technique
called “Redirecting”. Redirecting is the pro-
cess of answering a question (while preserving curiosity) and redirecting
to another question.
For instance, when asked the question: “Tell us a little about yourself”,
how do you normally respond?
Before you can answer this question, you need more information. If you
are like most people, this question can generate many different responses.
There is a lot you can talk about when asked this question. How do you
ensure your response is the one the employer is seeking?
Of course, the last thing we want to do is respond in a manner that elimi-
nates us from the process. Therefore we will use redirecting.
HIRING MANAGER:
“Tell me a little about yourself?”
YOU:
“I will be happy to. When I read your job description, it became clear that
everything I have done in my employment history has prepared me for this posi-
tion. It sounds like you are looking for someone with a fnancial background who
understands business development. I have a fnancial background with an extensive
experience in business development. This is the reason when I came across your job
description, I knew I have to meet with you. If this was the perfect world and you
found the ideal applicant, what qualities will this applicant possess?”
Notice we are redirecting by asking a question. Your goal is to get the
employer talking about their hot button.
Thank, compliment, redirect
