Asking “Why did
they think I am
overqualifed?”
shows that we are
holding the em-
ployer
accountable to
decipher the in-
formation we
included on our
resume. The in-
formation should
have been de-
coded for the
employer prior to
sending it to him
or her.
After reading your story, the employer determines if
you are someone they want to call.
Without a doubt, your resume is the single most impor-
tant tool when searching for employment. Every em-
ployer will judge you and your qualifcations based on
its content. Prior to being considered for an interview,
every employer, recruiter, employment agency, and
hiring authority frst asks that you “Send me a copy of
your resume.”
Being classifed as overqualifed, under-qualifed, or
not qualifed all result from a resume containing too
much, not enough, or the wrong information.
The Burden Is One You
Obviously no one initially considers themselves any-
thing but fully qualifed when submitting the resume,
but the information somehow conveyed the wrong
message. The burden is on you to convey your mes-
sage in a manner that presents you precisely as you
intended. The person reading your resume should not
have to decode the resume. Asking “Why did they
think I am overqualifed?” shows that we are holding
the employer accountable to decipher the information
we included on our resume. The information should
have been decoded for the employer prior to sending it
to him or her.
