STEP FOUR
Build Your Resume
Now let’s juice this person’s skills and put them in separate cups.
Product management gives us
orange juice
Recruitment gives us
apple juice
Customer Service gives us
celery juice
Traditionally we combined all three juices in one big cup and
gave the mixture to every employer. Whether they like it or not,
we expected the employer to drink it and like what they drank. A
person looking for apple juice was forced to also taste celery and
orange juices. Incidentally, have you tried drinking this combina-
tion? Some claim it tastes downright nasty. I have never tried it
for myself.
Unfortunately this old method of giving one cup of mixed fruit
juice to every employer today causes one to join the ranks of the
“still waiting for the call” group. This method worked the last
time you were looking for employment because you were there in
person to help the employer distinguish the various favors in the
cup.
Back then, you frst attended the interview, and gave your resume
only as a complementary piece.
